Engines of Sodor https://railroadsandrailways.webs.com/apps/photos/ Engines of Sodor Pumpkin The Pacific Engine Pumpkin, so nicknamed becauseof his paintjob, is a scrappy young diesel engine who came to the Island of Sodor in it's darkest hour. He came to help keep the railway economy from crashing when business was low and he was the first American diesel to ever arrive on the Island. As such, he wasn't liked by any of the engines, but he couldn't leave because he had no home in America. With patience from the others, he saved the Island from certain doom, and he is now considered a hero by the other engines. Pumpkin is happy-go-lucky and sometimes silly, but he always gets his work done and won't hesitate to make his opinions known. Pumpkin is based on a Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railroad GP40X B-B #3035 circa 1977. https://railroadsandrailways.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=19291304 19291304 Alaska The Northern Engine Alaska is a young diesel, about as old as Pumpkin, who came shortly after he did. She came to increase passenger travel appeal with her four double-decker coaches, Talkeetna, Kenai, Knik, and Deshka. At first, no one knew who she was because she only ran at night, and the other engines thought her a ghost. They became scared of her, until she finally was scheduled for a day run, and the engines grew to know and love her. She is quiet, calm, contemplative, and smart. Alaska does have a tendency to be lightheaded though. Alaska is based on an Alaska Railroad GP40 B-B #3015 circa 1977. https://railroadsandrailways.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=19291139 19291139 Donald The Switcher Twin Engine https://railroadsandrailways.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=19291305 19291305 Douglas The Switcher Twin Engine https://railroadsandrailways.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=19291306 19291306 Garrison The Great Pumpkin Engine Garrison is a very young diesel who came to Sodor for the halloween festivities. He came after the engines heard about Peanuts and the Great Pumpkin, as told by Pumpkin, but no one believed he existed. Pumpkin, with the help of his brothers in the States, recruited Gary to show them the REAL Great Pumpkin. Garrison is considered a hero among all the engines, especially the Americal diesels and all the BNSF Pumpkins. As such, he holds this in very high regard, but has yet to let it go to his head and understands the true value of family, friends, and hard work. He is quite virtuous by nature. Garrison is based on a Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railroad SD60M C-C #9297 circa 1991. https://railroadsandrailways.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=19291790 19291790 Hercules The Huge Engine Hercules is the second biggest engine to ever visit Sodor. He was recruited for heavy goods work to and from the mainland and for the Island's Centennial celebrations. Many engines have tried to break Hercules down, but not a single one has worked. He is friendly, helpful, and always obeys the orders of Sir Topham Hatt and Sir Jacob Jones, but he refuses to work for anyone else without their consent. Hercules is a spin-off of the TUGS character Hercules the Ocean-Going Tug. Hercules is based on a Union Pacific Railroad DD35A D-D #70 circa 1965. https://railroadsandrailways.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=19291789 19291789 Milo and Todd Milo and Todd are Pumpkin's brothers. They were never seen, but they were mentioned when Pumpkin was telling about the Great Pumpkin. Pumpkin contacted them, and they were the ones who got Garrison to travel to Europe. Milo and Todd are based on a Atchison Topkeka and Santa Fe Railroad GP40X B-B #3034 and #3032 circa 1977. https://railroadsandrailways.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=19362002 19362002 Thomas The Tank Engine Thomas is an old side tank engine who has been on the Island since the beginning. He is a cheeky, fussy little tank engine with a big heart. Thomas is the poster boy of Sodor, and is loved by everyone. He runs the Ffarquhar branch line with Annie and Clarabel, his two faithful coaches. Thomas was not very keen of more diesels on Sodor, and he hated Pumpkin with a passion when he first came. When Thomas finally realized he wasn't trying to take over the railway, he settled down and grew to like Pumpkin. Thomas is based on a London, Brighton and South Coast Railway E2 0-6-0T #105 circa 1915. https://railroadsandrailways.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=19291309 19291309 Edward The Blue Engine Edward is one of the oldest engines on the North Western Railway. He was the first engine on the Island when the railway was still being built. He is extremely kind to everyone, be it steam or diesel, but he might have some misconceptions or cranes. He often works as a back engine because he is old and can't carry much. When the railway was dying, Edward was one of the only characters to understand that, sometimes, help would have to come from places you never thought possible, even if you don't like the help given to you. Because of this, he welcomed Pumpkin with open buffers, and helped make him feel welcome. Edward is based on a Furness Railway K2 "Larger Seagull" 4-4-0 with refitted cab and Fowler tender circa 1896. https://railroadsandrailways.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=19291310 19291310 Henry The Green Engine Henry is a long, streamlined steam engine, and one of the older engines on the tracks. He, like Edward and Gordon, was there from the start. Henry is a very smart engine, but he is quite prone to getting ill or becoming sad. He also has a tremendous love for nature. He is well-known as one of the strongest engines on Sodor as well, and very few engines can beat him, even diesels can't. After Pumpkin arrived, he was slightly skeptical about him, but, like Edward, soon welcomed him after he proved himself very useful. Henry is based on a London, Midland and Scottish Railway Stanier 5MT "Black 5" 4-6-0 with Fowler tender circa 1920, rebuilt in 1950. https://railroadsandrailways.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=19291311 19291311 Gordon The Big Engine Gordon is a big blue express engine. He, like Henry and Edward, was one of the first steam engines on the tracks of Sodor. He is a very fast, very proud engine, and feels himself too good to pull trucks and will seldom do so, but this high-and-mighty attitude seems to have mellowed with age. He always feels better than everyone else, but will always help a friend in need, as he does have a very kind side. He thought Pumpkin coming to Sodor preposterous, and was even crosser when Alaska arrived and started taking his passengers. Since, he has grown to respect Pumpkin, but still holds a deep-seated grudge for Alaska. He is good friends with Adam. Gordon is based on a pre-production London and North Eastern Railway A1\A3 4-6-2 with Fowler Tender circa 1922. https://railroadsandrailways.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=19291140 19291140 James The Red Engine James is a smart red engine. He is a sassy, vain mixed traffic engine who hardly stops bragging about his bright red paint and brass dome. This can often lead him trouble, as he doesn't always know when he goes too far. That aside, he is a hard, useful worker whom everyone loves. James didn't like Pumpkin when he met him, and even tried to bump him off the rails. This failed, and all James did was hurt himself. With Pumpkin's help, he managed to get collected and now, he isn't necessarily friends with Pumpkin, but he respects him and his fellow diesels, and that's all he asks of James. James is based on a Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway class 27 rebuilt into a class 28 2-6-0 with added pony truck, removed sandboxes, and Fowler tender. https://railroadsandrailways.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=19291312 19291312 Percy The Small Engine Percy is a chipper little saddle tank engine. He is a cheeky little engine who likes to shunt in the yards and pull the mail train. Percy is very good friends with Thomas, as he is one of the only engines who respects him. Percy was excited about the new fleet of diesels, but was very surprised to see how big they were. Much the same, he is good friends with all of them, especially Donald and Douglas. He is afraid of Warrior. Percy is based on a Great Western Railway #1340 "Trojan" 0-4-0ST with added coal bunker and Hunslet parts, circa 1897. https://railroadsandrailways.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=19291313 19291313 Toby The Tram Engine Toby is a tram engine from East Anglia. He is a temperamental engine who acts like a father to all the engines, but they seldom take his advice. He has a coach, Henrietta, who he dearly loves. Like Edward, Toby realised what would become without help, and he welcomes all engines who have come to help. Toby is based on a Wisbech and Upwell Tramway J70 #68221 0-6-0T circa 1914. https://railroadsandrailways.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=19291314 19291314 a photo shopped thomas a lame attempt at photoshopping https://railroadsandrailways.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=31777776 31777776 Duck The Great Western Engine Duck is an old pannier tank engine who works on the Arlesburgh-Tidmouth branch line with Oliver, Donald, and Douglas. His original name was Montague. Duck came to Sodor many years ago to help Percy with heavy shunting, and soon got a line of his own. Duck is a kind engine who has lots of respect for everyone, but he won't let bigger engines boss him around. He is always willing to lend a hand, and he knows how to trick diesels. Duck was one of the later characters to meet Pumpkin (due to him being on a small branchline) and had his doubts. He tried to trick him the same way he did to Diesel, and it failed. Now he has respect for Pumpkin, but makes sure he stays in his place. Duck is based on a Great Western Railway 5700 Class 0-6-0PT #5741 with added sandboxes circa 1929. https://railroadsandrailways.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=19703952 19703952 Bill The Tank Engine Twin Bill and Ben are two tank engine twins that work for the Sodor China Clay Company, near Brendam. They enjoy playing tricks and being cheeky to bigger engines. Bill and Ben were built by W.G. Bagnall in 1953 and arrived on Sodor in 1966. [edit] Main Line Engines One day, Bill and Ben returned from shunting some trucks to find that some other trucks previously shunted by them were missing. Their drivers, after examining a puddle of oil on the ground, concluded a diesel was responsible. After the twins argued over who brought the "diseasel" into the yard, the drivers suggested they go looking the diesel. The twins were horrified at the possibility that the "diseasel" might magic them away like he did with the trucks, but their drivers quickly persuaded them otherwise, and so they set off. At last, the twins found the "diseasel". While Ben ran behind, Bill confronted the "diseasel" over the theft. The "diseasel" claimed the trucks were his and ordered Bill to "go away"; Bill pretended to be frightened and slunk away, remarking, "You'll be sorry". With that, Ben ran up and accused the "diseasel" of being a "truck stealer", before running back so Bill could run up again. This continued until the "diseasel", under the impression that there was only one very swift and annoying saddletank, became so giddy that his eyes "nearly popped out", just as the twins puffed up beside him. The "diseasel", initially confused, laughed at his ignorance. When Edward arrived moments later, enquiring as to why Bill and Ben were not shunting, the twins angrily claimed that the "diseasel" had snuck into their yard and stolen their trucks. Edward soon realised what was going on, and explained the situation. The twins, embarrassed, apologised to the "diseasel", who asked to be called BoCo, and then left to shunt some more trucks, leaving Edward and BoCo to laugh about the incident. A few days later, after BoCo took the Express in James' "absence", Edward recounted what Gordon had said about branchlines to the twins. The next morning, after Gordon ended up at Brendam after a series of events involving poor preparations and a large floppy green hat, the twins snuck up beside him and loudly recounted what Gordon had said about branchlines. Concluding that the engine beside them could not be Gordon, the two declared he was nothing more than a pile of old scrap-iron, and began to contemplate what they should do (Bill was all for sending Gordon to be scrapped, while Ben favoured the more humane, or engane, option of dumping him in the sea), all the while ignoring Gordon's protests, until at last, BoCo arrived. Gordon begged him to save him, and so BoCo threatened the twins to leave with the trucks he had brought. The twins quickly left, leaving Gordon with BoCo. BoCo wisely neglected to tell Gordon the twins were joking. Sometime later, a group of enthusiasts came to visit the railways of Sodor. When Edward brought them to Brendam, the twins took them to the China Clay Workings in a "Brakevan special". [edit] Thomas and the Twins In 1988, Thomas was sent to work on Edward's branch line while repairs were carried out on the bridge. The twins were quick to tease him about his colour, but Edward was savvy enough to sent the twins away before an argument broke out. After Thomas returned to the Yard, covered in dairy from a collision with a farm lorry, the two teased him even more about his new livery. This continued until Edward announced a party of enthusiasts were coming, and threatened that he would not bring them to see the twins. The twins, excited, decided instead to worry about their own paint - ie, how clean it was - although one day, when the drivers remarked that "the enthusiasts [wouldn't] eat their dinner off [them]", Bill quipped that "They might if we were Thomas". When, at last, the enthusiasts did arrive, a photographer with an "instant" camera began harassing Ben by continuously taking pictures of him, even after the remainder of the crowd went to watch Bill tug a boat into deeper waters. At last the photographer prepared to take one final picture, just as Bill's driver arrived to ask for assistance. Ben's driver turned on the steam just the photographer took the picture; disgusted with the poor quality of the shot, he abandoned it on the floor and left. The picture was later discovered by Bill's driver after the two rescued the boat. The repairs to the bridge took a long time, and Thomas was still at Brendam when the rainy season came. At the "Drain", a hollow in the land where rainwater collected, the water even began to come near the rails, although no one took much notice. One particularly wet day, as Ben returned from the Workings, the wind wipped the rainwater into a wave which swamped Ben, dousing his fire. His fireman went for assistance, and brought Thomas to help. While Thomas dragged Ben out, Bill took away the trucks. When at last the water subsided four days later and Bill returned to Brendam, the two made a pact to never tease Thomas again. https://railroadsandrailways.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=34253581 34253581 Ben The Tank Engine Twin Bill and Ben are two tank engine twins that work for the Sodor China Clay Company, near Brendam. Stepney later visited Sodor to have a change from his line, and again to help Toby and Mavis to help at the quarry - this exurcusion nearly ended in disaster after 'Arry and Bert tried to scrap Stepney, luckily without success, after Stepney accidentally ventured into the scrapyards. Stepney later visited for unknown reasons in one episode, apparently to help Duck again, and was later helped by Edward with the running of a new loop line. During a later visit, he was hit by a truck of sugar in an incident caused by Rosie. https://railroadsandrailways.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=34253583 34253583 Emily The Emerald Engine Emily is a dark green engine who came to Sodor in 2003. She is friendly, helpful, and always thinks she knows best. She acts as a sisterly figure to all the engines and will often try to boss them around if given the opportunity. Emily didn't like Pumpkin at first, but now she doesn't mind having him around from time to time. Emily is based on a Great Northern Railway G class 4-2-2 "Stirling Single" circa 1870. https://railroadsandrailways.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=19291598 19291598 Mavis The Quarry Diesel Mavis is a feisty diesel engine who came to Sodor in 1962. She is a small diesel-mechanical engine brought to help Toby at Ffarquhar and Anopha with truck shunting. At first, Mavis was feisty, disobedient and did only what she wanted to do. With time and teachings from Toby, she learned to be a really useful engine. She welcomed Pumpkin and helped show him the more remote parts of the Island. Mavis is based on a British Rail class 04 Drewry diesel-mechanical 0-6-0 # D2203 with added sideplates and "saxo" funnel circa 1952. https://railroadsandrailways.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=19291315 19291315 Spencer The Silver Engine Spencer is the private engine of the Duke and Duchess of Boxford. He is a big, shiny, silver showoff of an engine. HE thinks he is better than all of the engines of Sodor combined. Even directly related to Gordon, he still thinks he is better than him. This attitude has gotten him in trouble more than once. Spencer is based on a London and North Eastern Railway class A4 4-6-2 #2509 "Silver Link" with removed wheel guards circa 1935. https://railroadsandrailways.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=19291599 19291599 Skarloey The Brave Engine Skarloey is a very old engine who works on the railway named after him. He is the brother of Rheneas. Skarloey likes to prove himself a brave, useful little engine, and he has proved himself as one time and time again.
